How BC probate fees work
BC charges no fee on the first $25,000, 0.6% on the portion between $25,000 and $50,000, and 1.4% on everything above $50,000, plus a $200 court filing fee for estates over $25,000.
The fee applies to assets that pass through the estate — typically BC real estate in the deceased's sole name and accounts that require a grant of probate to release. Assets with a named beneficiary (life insurance, RRSPs, TFSAs) or held in joint tenancy usually pass outside the estate and aren't counted.
